How should I set out the cover letter?
6. Show your skills • This is your opportunity to sell yourself. Be confident in your abilities and make sure the employer focuses on these. Accentuate your strengths rather than your weaknesses or areas for improvement. • Use your STAR stories to back up your claims and provide concrete evidence of where you have shown your skills in real life situations. 7. Closing statements • Ensure that you emphasise your desire for the role and express your interest for an in-person interview. • Finally, ensure your sign off aligns with how you addressed it. If you addressed someone by name then sign off with ‘Yours Sincerely’. If you used a general address, then sign of with ‘Yours Faithfully’.
Here are list of things to remember when formatting your cover letter. • Use a modern font such as Calibri, Arial, Arial Narrow that is easy to read, rather than Times New Roman. • Use bullets or short paragraphs to summarise your experiences and skills. • Bold or underline your section headers but be consistent with your format choice. • Ensure all your style choices are consistent throughout the cover letter, using only one font and avoid colour. • Avoid tables, columns and lines across sections. • Include your email, date, name, and contact details at the top right of your document. • Be professional in your address and signing off.
