Somerhill Review 2023/24

THE SOMERHILL REVIEW 2023/24

Athletics & Sports Day In the Trinity term, Athletics took over from PE lessons for all pupils. Learning a wide range of disciplines, it was particularly pleasing to see our pupils’ determination and desire to improve their personal bests in all events in readiness for Sports Day. Somerhill pupils competed against Hilden Grange, Dulwich Cranbrook, Holmewood House, and St. Ronan’s in several team fixtures. Tonbridge School hosted its annual meet, and for the first time in six years, Somerhill came away as the winners out of 12 schools. Kent IAPS Regional Athletics saw 19 medals won, resulting in 10 pupils qualifying for the National IAPS finals in 12 different events. Freddie Di Marco Hunn broke the Kent U14 high jump record with a superb clearance of 1m 68cm. Douglas Bridgeland recorded an impressive result in the 800m with a bronze medal. Sports Day this year had to be postponed due to weather but arrived in full force before we broke for the summer. Over the course of the day, Somerhill pupils competed in nine field events and ten track events, showcasing their skills, determination, and sportsmanship. The event highlighted the collective spirit and talent within our school community. With a vibrant atmosphere and impressive performances, the day was a resounding success. Congratulations to this year’s winners of our VL prizes and our overall house winners, Ashmore and Coniston. Extra Sports Our pupils’ sporting talents and skills are not solely left to our core sports. Somerhill pupils performed wonderfully well in many other sports, such as tennis, girls’ football, judo, equestrian, karting, skiing, cyclocross, and road cycling! We have also heard of many alumni pupils doing particularly well in sports such as cricket, rugby, hockey, swimming, and netball. Most notably, Angus Hall has been representing England as part of the U20 Rugby squad and has signed a professional contract with Saracens for the 2024-25 season.
