CLASSICAL CIVILISATION

A LEVEL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

A LEVEL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Grade 9-5 in five GCSEs including English and Mathematics. Plus, a minimum Grade 6 in GCSE History and English Language or GCSE English Literature. COURSE DESCRIPTION A level Classical Civilisation has been designed to provide students with a broad, coherent and rewarding study of the literature and culture of the classical work. Classical Civilisation will help students to understand the legacy of this classical work. Students will cover three components as below: 1. Content of The World of the Hero – students will study one of either Homer’s lliad or Odyssey, as well as Virgil’s Aeneid. Students will develop knowledge and understanding of the epics themselves, the way in which they were composed, and the religious, cultural and social values and beliefs of its society. 2. Greek Religion – Some of the key topics covered include the nature of the Olympian gods, personal experience of the divine (mystery cults, the healing cult of Asclepius and the oracle at Dodona), religion and society. 3. Invention of the Barbarian – this topic allows students to explore how the Greeks saw themselves as distinct from their ‘barbarian’ neighbours. Topics include Greek identity, The Persian Wars and Greek unity. WHAT NEXT Classical Civilisation is a well-respected qualification that enables you to study a mixture of classics, history and literature. It develops a wide range of skills that are transferable to further study or the workplace such as analytical skills, communication, critical evaluation, cultural awareness and assessing and interpreting information.

Grade 9-5 in five GCSEs with a minimum Grade 6 in both English and Mathematics. Plus, Grade 6’s in Double Science, Triple Science or GCSE Chemistry. COURSE DESCRIPTION Students will study contemporary Chemistry, covering the following mandatory units: Development of practical skills; Foundations in Chemistry; Periodic table and energy; Core organic Chemistry; Physical Chemistry and transition elements and organic Chemistry and analysis. ASSESSMENT Grade A*-E awarded. The mandatory units are externally assessed by three examinations. The first two exams equate to 37% each with the final exam worth 26%. A “Practical endorsement in Chemistry” is assessed internally but is reported separately from the A level grade. WHAT NEXT Completion of this qualification will give between 16 and 56 UCAS points to gain entry onto a degree course or entry into the workplace. Chemistry can lead to further study and including careers in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical science.
