The CV The humble CV has been around since Leonardo Da Vinci handwrote to the Duke of Milan about the post of military engineer. In the letter he outlined his skills, creative abilities and why he was the best candidate for the job. We might call it a cover letter today but in essence it was a presentation of his suitability for a role in written format. Whilst the Curriculum Vitae has come a long way since then, it is still the passport document to get you to an interview.

Do I need a CV? It might surprise you that not everyone needs a CV. A lot of trades people move on to different jobs or contracts often by word of mouth or evidence of their accomplished work. An artist is expected to provide a portfolio of their creative talents for potential clients. Someone going for an advertising or marketing role might decide to produce a video CV. For an actor having a website with their online showreel, list of works and biography may be the most appropriate way to communicate their craft. For the rest , the standard word-processed CV is the norm.
