What does it mean to tailor your CV? Tailoring your CV is about adapting it for the job role you wish to apply for. Once you have created the content, you need to think about changes that might enhance it for that role. A lot of people make no changes to their generic CV and just hope it is good enough. With so much competition for jobs, an untailored CV is unlikely to go far. Here are some tips on how you can adapt it. Tips • Adjust the content on your profile showing your interest in the industry sector and the role. • Rework your skills section so the most relevant ones for the role appear near the top and you have covered the essential skills they are looking for. • Explore changing your CV format to a different style e.g. skill based or functional to demonstrate your transferable skills where you might not have all the experiences they want.

How far back should a CV go? That all depends on the role you are going for, your ability to demonstrate the skills needed and how recently you worked in the role you want. If you are applying for a position that has tasks which you have already done, then seven years of history should be sufficient. If you are using a skills-based CV, you might need other roles to demonstrate your capability. Remember, the further back you go the more irrelevant the jobs could become if the skills and knowledge required now have vastly changed.
