What is a cover letter? Cover letters are a crucial stage in the job application process. They are a short written document summarising why you specifically should be considered for the role. They are submitted with your CV and are reviewed by employers at an early stage in the application process. For this reason it is extremely important to ensure your cover letter is strong as it forms the initial impression an employer will have of you. You must convince them that you are the ideal candidate.

Do I need a cover letter? Depending on the application process you may need to submit a cover letter with your CV. Always submit a cover letter if it is asked for alongside your CV. If you leave it out or forget to send it, expect your application to go no further. If a job advert has the option to include a digital cover letter make sure you include one. Just because it’s optional, that doesn’t mean it isn’t necessary or helpful. Remember, the cover letter will give you the opportunity to highlight your personal value and persuade employers to consider you for the role. So not including it at this stage could be a mistake. Learning how to build one is an essential skill and it is worthwhile constructing one because you can develop and improve upon it with time. Even if a job posting does not explicitly ask for a cover letter you should assume that one is required and send one in anyway alongside your CV. You want prospective employers to have a well-rounded and clear view of you.
