How should I write a cover letter?
or characteristic. Use examples to strengthen your points (see the point below on STAR stories).
1. Introducing your cover letter • If you know the name of the person who will be reading your cover letter than be sure to address them directly. • Otherwise use a general greeting. For example, Dear Sir/Madam. 2. Address the specific skills and aptitudes they are advertising on the job posting • Read through the job advert and note down what it is exactly that they are looking for. • Once you have compiled your list you can use this when writing your cover letter to ensure you address each specific skill and aptitude they are looking for, showing that you are the perfect candidate. • Structure your cover letter by stating each skill, quality or characteristic that you have pulled from the job posting. Then after each one show how you have the given skill, quality
3. Find out as much about the company and the role as possible • Research the company thoroughly. Look through their website and social media profiles. Also be aware of current news in the industry as a whole to see how the company fits into the bigger picture. • Go beyond the scope of their own postings. Do a Google search to find any annual reports, press releases, articles in other publications, case studies. • This will help you gage a better idea of what the company is essentially about. • You will then be able to adapt your cover letter to align with the company’s core values.
