Yearly Life at Somerhill
Year 6 visit Horton Kirby
The Year 6 boys and girls undertook a geography field trip to Horton Kirby near Dartford as part of their study of rivers. Pupils spent the morning in the River Darent measuring the depth and speed of the river at different locations. In addition, they learned about the biodiversity of the Darent by looking at some of the vertebrates and invertebrates collected in river nets and then examined in trays. Back at the environmental centre, pupils spent the afternoon learning about the River Darent's journey from its source near Westerham to where it joins the River Thames, making their own models of rivers with trays of mud and water, as well as studying rocks under microscopes to investigate which type of rock was permeable or impermeable.
